# Discount codes

> Create event-specific codes that take a fixed amount off a patron's order.

Give patrons a code to take a fixed amount off their ticket subtotal. Each code belongs to one event and applies once to the whole order, regardless of how many tickets the patron buys.

<Info>
  Only the event creator can view and manage its discount codes. Committee membership or a team role does not grant access.
</Info>

## Create a code

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Discounts">
    Select **Events** in the sidebar and open your event. Click **More**, then **Discounts**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start a new code">
    Click **Create a code** for your first code, or **New code** if you already have one.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the code and amount">
    Enter **Code** and **Discount Amount**. The amount must be greater than zero and uses your event's ticket currency: TTD, JMD, or USD.

    Codes are case-insensitive. A patron can enter SAVE50 or save50 to use the same code. You cannot create the same code twice for one event.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set an optional usage limit">
    Enter a whole number of at least 1 in **Max uses**, or leave it blank for unlimited uses.

    This limits orders using the code, not tickets or uses per patron.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create and share">
    Click **Create Code**. The code is **Active** immediately. Share it with the patrons you want to offer the discount to.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## How the discount affects an order

For example, you sell TTD 100 tickets and create SAVE50 with a **Discount Amount** of 50. A patron buying two tickets gets TTD 50 off the TTD 200 ticket subtotal, leaving TTD 150 before fees.

Taack spreads the discount across the tickets and recalculates percentage fees using the reduced prices. Your existing fee split still applies. The flat order fee remains unless the ticket subtotal reaches zero.

A discount cannot exceed the ticket subtotal. If it covers the entire subtotal, the order has no processing fees and the patron does not enter a card.

Patrons enter the code in **Discount code** at checkout and click **Apply**. See [Find and buy tickets](/patrons/find-and-buy-tickets) for the checkout steps.

## Track uses and pause a code

The **Discounts** list shows each code's amount, **Active** or **Inactive** status, and use count. If you set **Max uses**, the count appears alongside that limit.

Open checkouts holding the code count toward its limit as well as completed orders. A use count is therefore not a count of completed sales. Removing the code from an open checkout releases that use.

Click **Deactivate** to stop patrons applying the code to new checkouts. Click **Activate** to make it available again, provided it has uses remaining. Deactivating a code does not remove a discount already applied to an open checkout.

## Limits to know

* You can offer fixed amounts, not percentage discounts.
* A patron can apply only one code per order.
* Discount codes cannot be used with payment plans.
* Codes apply across the order; you cannot restrict them to a ticket type.
* The usage limit is shared across patrons. It does not prevent one patron using the code on several orders.
* You can create, activate, and deactivate codes. The dashboard does not offer editing, deletion, or an expiry-date setting. Create a different code if you need a different amount or usage limit.
